Explore two significant historical sites in Armenia, the Areni-1 Cave and Noravank Monastery, through the My Armenia program, a collaborative initiative between USAID, the Smithsonian, and local partners. The My Armenia project leverages the Smithsonian's expertise in cultural heritage research to illuminate and preserve Armenia's rich history.

• Areni-1 Cave: This cave complex, initially studied in 2007, offers intriguing insights into the prehistoric era of the region, shedding light on the inhabitants from 6,000 years ago. Excavations at Areni-1 have unearthed burial pots with young skulls, remarkably preserved plant remnants, and the world's oldest leather shoe. Moreover, the site boasts ancient winemaking artifacts, including a wine press, establishing it as one of the earliest known wine production sites.
• Noravank Monastery: Dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, Noravank Monastery served as a spiritual hub and residence for the Orbelian princes. Renowned Armenian figures like architect Siranes and artist Momik contributed to the monastery's architectural and artistic heritage. Noteworthy at the site are its original khachkars – intricately carved Armenian cross stones – with many attributed to the skilled hand of Momik.
